What is a Recycling Baler?

A baler is a machine used to compress bulky loose waste materials into smaller compact bales for easier handling and transportation. It is a must-have piece of equipment in waste management and recycling industry.

Materials are fed into the baler, then driven by hydraulic pressure, the platen presses the materials into high dense bales in the compression chamber. After the bale reaches the required size, it will be tied off and ejected out from the baler. Then the operator moves the finished bales away with forklift or similar tools. The final bales will be shipped to be recycled.

Recycling balers can process almost all kinds of solid materials such as cardboard, paper, plastic bottles, beverage cans, wrapping films, used clothes, fibers, and so on. Different Types of Recycling Balers

Vertical baler is also called downstroke baler, just as its name implies, the machine has one or two hydraulic cylinders moving downwards to compress the materials. The ram is an up-and-down motion. Vertical baler has a feed opening in the front of the machine where the materials are loaded in. Vertical baler is with small footprint compared with horizontal balers, so that it can be applied in much more places. It is more flexible in use, but it is lower output compared to horizontal balers. Therefore, vertical balers are commonly suitable for small to medium scale waste recycling businesses.

Horizontal balers’ structure is different from vertical balers. They have a hopper on machine top for material feeding and the hopper can connect with a conveyor belt for automatic feeding. The ram platen runs horizontally when compressing material. Horizontal balers take up large floor area and makes bigger bales. They usually suit for customers who require large productivity. Of course, horizontal balers are much more expensive than vertical balers. Horizontal baler can further fall into two types which are closed-door baler and auto-tie baler. The main difference between these two balers is the way of bale tying. Closed-door baler (semi-automatic) is a manual-tie horizontal baler, while the auto-tie baler is an automatic horizontal baler.

Bagging balers (also named compression bagger) are a special group of recycling balers. They bag the finished bale, but not tie off the bale like vertical and horizontal balers. They bag because of the material characteristics they process. Bagging balers are specialized in baling small pieces of material such as rice husk, peanut shells, wood shavings, rags, haylage, leaves, etc. These balers are ideal to be used in agriculture, rag, animal feeding and bedding industries, as well as timber mills. The bale sizes produced by bagging balers are relatively smaller than common vertical balers and horizontal balers.

Marine Baler (marine garbage compactor) is a type of baler specially used in ships or offshore applications, to optimize the waste management on board. The baler is small sized as to adapt to the limited space and usually own particular features to withstand the harsh conditions on board.

Liquid Extraction Baler is another special baler for compressing hollow products such as plastic bottles, milk jugs, aluminum cans. One of the main features of this baler is that they have extra-long hydraulic cylinder to ensure complete compaction of each bottle or can inside the baling chamber. Another feature is that they have a liquid drainage channel to drain out the residual liquid from the baler.

Doorless-raised chamber baler is a baler particularly making bundles for textile materials like used clothing, wool, cotton waste, etc. The whole baling chamber can be raised up when a bale is ready to wrap and strap. This baler is ideal for textile industry.
